about

Wide Shot: Cumbria, February 2006. Silent and snow-capped, Helvellyn goes about its business. Rodents are dormant. In the middle distance, a rock the size of a footballer’s tie-knot is obeying the laws of thermodynamics. Suzie the Sunshine Bus meanders through the foreground towards Crossthwaite. Within her buckling white flanks a tonne of meat knocks 18 of its knees together in anticipation. Bison are going on their holidays. Tara barks at a smell on the floor. Pete Not Bombs is folded neatly in the glove compartment with a bottle of Morrison’s own single malt. All is rod.

And so it goes: for six long days and nights within the thick stone walls of a modest cottage the herd toil, slave and generally pillock around.

The result is the Dark Side of the Moo, Bison’s third album and a bit of a departure, which finds them exploring the more unusual material that has always surrounded the skanking heart of their sound (although raucous opener Spleen in a Hoop ensures that side is represented too). Full of light and shade, the album features some creative studio mixing and a guest appearance from Peckham’s finest agit-eejit DJ Rubbish.

The lunatics are definitely on the grass.

about

Bison Sheffield, UK

Bison is a horns-front, hoof-stomping party beast from Sheffield. Their sound is diverse, centred on ska but taking in swing, soul, hip hop, electronica, and anything else that takes their fancy. The emphasis is firmly on songs, orangeness and knees.
